Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In 2023, about 7,314 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. These deaths accounted for roughly 18 percent of all traffic fatalities that year. Since reaching their lowest point in 2009, pedestrian deaths have risen by nearly 78 percent.

Hit-and-run crashes remain a major concern. In 2023, one in every four pedestrian fatalities involved a hit-and-run. Between 2014 and 2019, hit-and-run incidents made up around 20 percent of pedestrian deaths. This number increased to 24 percent in 2020 and has remained near 25 percent in recent years.

Long-term data shows improvements in pedestrian safety for most age groups. Children under 13 experienced the largest decline in fatality rates, dropping by 93 percent from 1975 to 2023. Teenagers aged 13 to 19 saw a 71 percent decrease, while adults aged 70 and older had a 73 percent decline. Adults between 20 and 44 were the only group to experience an increase, with deaths rising by about 6 percent.

Since 2009, pedestrian death rates among adults over 20 have continued to increase, while rates for children and teens have steadily declined. These patterns point to an ongoing age-related divide in pedestrian safety nationwide.
