DUI Accident Statistics
Alcohol-impaired driving remains one of the main causes of deadly and serious injury crashes on California roads. In 2023, there were 1,355 deaths linked to alcohol-related crashes. This marked a 4.5 percent decrease from 2022 but reflected nearly a 55 percent increase compared to 2014.
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) continues to support programs guided by the Safe System framework. This approach recognizes that crashes may still happen, but focuses on preventing them from resulting in deaths or severe injuries. Through this framework, the OTS works to reduce crash risks and strengthen every layer of road safety to protect all users across the state.
