Truck Accident Statistics
Crashes involving large trucks remain a major safety concern, especially for people in smaller vehicles. According to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), most deaths in these crashes involve occupants of passenger vehicles. Large trucks can weigh 20 to 30 times more than a standard car and often sit higher off the ground, increasing the risk of underride collisions.
In 2023, an estimated 4,354 people died in crashes involving large trucks. Of those deaths, 16 percent were truck occupants, 65 percent were passengers in other vehicles, and 17 percent were pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcyclists. When compared to 2009, which recorded the lowest number of truck-related deaths since 1975, overall fatalities in 2023 were 38 percent higher, and deaths among truck occupants increased by 58 percent.
These figures highlight the continued risks associated with large truck crashes and support ongoing efforts to improve safety and awareness on U.S. roadways.
