Motorcycle Accident Statistics
Motorcycle crashes continue to be a serious concern on roads throughout the United States. In 2021, an estimated 5,932 motorcyclists were killed in traffic accidents nationwide. California reported 565 of those fatalities.
Across the country, motorcycle deaths increased by 7.7 percent from 2020 to 2021. California also saw an increase, although at a lower rate of 2.9 percent. These numbers indicate that motorcyclists continue to face significant risks, despite ongoing efforts to improve safety.
While motorcycles make up only a small share of all vehicles on the road, they account for a large portion of fatal traffic accidents. These crashes are often more severe because riders do not have the same level of protection as people in enclosed vehicles. This reality underscores the importance of wearing helmets, practicing safe riding habits, and implementing programs that promote motorcycle safety.
