Pedestrian Accident Statistics

National data shows that pedestrian deaths remain a major roadway safety issue. In 2023, about 7,314 people walking were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. These cases made up roughly 18 percent of all traffic fatalities for the year. This number is also part of a long-term rise. Compared to 2009, which marked the lowest point for pedestrian deaths, fatalities have increased by almost 80 percent.

Hit-and-run crashes continue to play a significant role in these incidents. Around one in four pedestrian deaths last year involved a driver who left the scene. Between 2014 and 2019, hit-and-run cases accounted for about 20 percent of pedestrian fatalities. That percentage went up to 24 percent in 2020 and has slowly grown to about 25 percent in more recent years.

Long-term trends also show different outcomes across age groups. Fatalities among children under 13 have dropped sharply, with a 93 percent decrease from 1975 to 2023. Teenagers between 13 and 19 have seen a 71 percent decline, and adults 70 and older have had a 73 percent reduction during the same period. However, adults ages 20 to 44 are the only group with an increase, showing a 6 percent rise in fatality rates. Since 2009, deaths among adults have continued to grow, while numbers for children and teens have steadily gone down.
