Car Accident Statistics

The United States is among the countries with some of the highest traffic-related death rates per million people. The rate of traffic fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled (VMT) reached its peak in 2016 but gradually declined to 1.11 deaths per 100 million VMT by 2019, showing some progress in road safety.

Despite this improvement, traffic deaths increased again in 2020, reaching the highest levels since 2016. This rise coincided with the partial reopening of states after COVID-19 stay-at-home orders. Most fatalities involved people in vehicles, excluding motorcyclists, who still made up a significant portion of road deaths.

For non-fatal crashes, drivers and passengers in vehicles consistently had the most injuries. This reflects the widespread use of cars and light trucks in the U.S., which are much more common than motorcycles or bicycles.

From 2015 to 2016, motor vehicle injuries increased sharply, followed by a drop in 2017. Numbers then stayed relatively steady through 2019. Despite these changes, the high number of vehicles on U.S. roads continues to make traffic injuries a major public safety concern.
