Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Every year, thousands of pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes across the United States, and many more sustain serious non-fatal injuries. The likelihood of these incidents often depends on several factors, such as vehicle speed, roadway design, vehicle type, and alcohol involvement.
In 2022, more than 8,000 pedestrians were killed nationwide, which averages to about one death every hour. That same year, an estimated 140,000 pedestrians were treated in emergency departments for non-fatal injuries. Pedestrian deaths represented about 20 percent of all traffic fatalities, showing that people traveling on foot remain among the most vulnerable road users.
