Truck Accident Statistics
Statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute show that most people who die in crashes involving large trucks are occupants of passenger vehicles. This highlights the vulnerability of people in smaller vehicles. Large trucks can weigh 20 to 30 times more than passenger cars and often have higher ground clearance, which increases the chance of smaller vehicles sliding underneath during a collision.
In 2023, a total of 4,354 people were killed in crashes that involved large trucks. Of these deaths, 16 percent were truck occupants. Sixty-five percent were people in cars and other passenger vehicles. Seventeen percent were pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists. When compared to 2009, which had the lowest number of large truck crash deaths since 1975, the total number of fatalities in 2023 was 38 percent higher. Fatalities among truck occupants increased even more, rising by 58 percent.
