Fatal Big Rig Accident Statistics

The term “big-rig” refers to the tractor-trailers and semis with which we share the road with. These terms are used interchangeably for large cargo vehicles. While the average car weighs around 4,000 pounds, a large rig can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. This massive size disparity can result in serious and frequently fatal accidents. A fully loaded big truck requires up to 40% additional stopping distance.

Since 2009, the number of accidents involving large vehicles has climbed by 30 percent. According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the United States Department of Transportation, there were about 4,102 road fatalities involving a large rig in 2017. Semi-truck accidents are caused by various circumstances, including truck loss of control, tire blowouts, disabling or non-disabling vehicle malfunction, excessive speed, lane drifting, and inappropriate truck maneuver driver tiredness.
