Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

One of the most common types of car accidents is a rear-end collision. Aside from that, they’re extremely hazardous. When one vehicle is stopped and the other is traveling at high speed, these collisions are more likely to occur. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, rear-end collisions cause approximately 950,000 injuries and 2,000 deaths each year (NTSB).

In California, rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car crashes. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that in 2011, 118,029 drivers were injured in rear-end collisions, and 405 drivers died due to those collisions. Rear-end accidents can be caused by various factors, including distracted driving, tailgating recklessly, and driving while intoxicated.

Most rear-end collisions are caused by drivers following too closely, driving too fast, having worn-out brakes or tires, or simply not paying attention, so the vehicle driver in the back is almost always responsible. These are factors that are within the control of the rear driver, not the front one.
