Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicycles are classified as vehicles in California. On the other hand, Bicyclists must behave in the same way they would if driving a car and stopping at red lights, and riding in the same direction as traffic is among their responsibilities. The same rules apply to bicycles as they do to other modes of transportation.

Unfortunately, many motorists fail to respect bicyclists’ rights and ride too close or try to pass them when it is unsafe to do so. Injuries and deaths are a result.

According to data, California has the highest annual bicycle fatalities across the country. These accidents are especially common in metropolitan settings, where the two modes of transportation frequently contact each other. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 455 cyclists were killed in California from 2016 to 2018.

Collisions between cars and bicycles primarily cause injuries and deaths to bicyclists in California. Many of these accidents occurred because the vehicle failed to cede the right of way, was unable to check for bikes before pulling out, failed to stop at a stop sign or red light, or wasn’t paying attention to the road.
