[01-22-2026] Contra Costa County, CA – Big-Rig Driver Hospitalized After Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 24

A big-rig driver was hospitalized after a semi-truck overturned during a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of Highway 24 in Oakland near the Caldecott Tunnel on Thursday afternoon, January 22, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at about 3:50 p.m. on Highway 24 near State Highway 13.

CHP said the crash began when a Subaru made an unsafe lane change into the path of a Nissan and then slowed due to traffic conditions.

Authorities said the Nissan rear-ended the Subaru and was then struck by a Peterbilt big-rig towing a 53-foot trailer loaded with cardboard. The big rig overturned and came to rest, blocking all westbound lanes of Highway 24.

CHP reported that cardboard from the overturned trailer struck a Ford pickup truck. Traffic was diverted to the northbound Highway 13 while crews responded, and the westbound lanes reopened at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The driver of the big rig complained of pain in the right leg and left arm and was transported to Highland Hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
