Two drivers were sent to the hospital with possible injuries following a collision with a big rig in Simi Valley on Tuesday morning, January 31, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle collision involving a pickup and big rig occurred after 9:10 a.m. near Madera Road and Viewline Drive, north of Highway 118.
CHP reported that the big rig lost control after it struck the curb while exiting Highway 118 and turning right onto Madera Road. The big rig’s trailer tipped over the pickup.
The pickup driver was transported to the hospital for evaluation of possible injuries and pain assessment. The semi’s driver was also taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation despite having no apparent injuries.
The intersection was shut down by the Simi Valley Police Department for several hours while workers cleared the wreckage. The exit onto Madera was reopened around 1:30 p.m.
Big Rig Accident Statistics
Since big rigs are typically stronger, truck drivers have a lesser chance of serious or fatal injuries in the event of an accident compared to smaller vehicles. The National Safety Council reports that this is the main cause of mortality and injury for both pedestrians and drivers of smaller cars. In an accident involving one of these large vehicles, the lives of those involved are sometimes in significant danger, both physically and psychologically.
In the United States, over 4,000 people each year lose their lives in car crashes. Only 2% of these collisions involve large vehicles, but they are responsible for 11% of the deaths that result. California enforces a 55 mph speed limit for big rigs on all public roadways in an effort to prevent the occurrence of accidents involving semi-trucks and the resulting loss of life.
In 2017, there were around 28,000 truck-related accidents in California, as reported by the California Office of Traffic Safety. There were about 369 fatalities and almost 9,000 injuries.
