A 48-year-old man was killed after being struck by a car while attempting to cross Highway 74 in Homeland, Riverside County, on Wednesday evening, February 01, 2023.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig, the fatal pedestrian crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on the Highway’s eastbound side west of Steinhoff Avenue.
The Homeland man reportedly tried to veer to the highway’s southbound side from walking along the four-lane corridor’s north shoulder. He managed to cross the westbound lanes, but a 2013 Mercedes C250 struck him as he began to cross the eastbound lanes.
The driver, a 33-year-old man from Perris traveling at about 40 mph, couldn’t stop or swerve in time to avoid the man. He was unharmed, pulled over right away, and waited for the authorities to arrive.
Paramedics from the Riverside County Fire Department later declared the pedestrian dead on the spot. His identity is not yet known.
Highway 74’s eastbound lanes were closed for several hours as the investigation ensued.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The number of fatalities attributed to traffic accidents fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to data published by the Governors Highway Safety Association. However, the number of pedestrian fatalities rose by 27% during that time frame. This incident exemplifies the increasing risk that pedestrians face on American roads.
More roundabouts are being built by the California Department of Transportation, and Pedestrian Assessments in cities with high collision rates are being funded by the Office of Traffic Safety. Engineering, education, and enforcement strategies provided these recommendations in these analyses.
Education about pedestrian safety has seen a 40 percent increase in funding over the past three years. A Senior Pedestrian curriculum created at the University of San Diego is now available to the public.
