Two motorcycle riders were injured following a collision on Interstate 15 near Mountain Pass in San Bernardino County on Saturday morning, February 04, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-motorcycle crash occurred around 10:23 a.m. along southbound I-15 at the California Agricultural Inspection Station.
Responders from CHP, Clark County Fire Department, and San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived at the scene where two motorcycles crashed in the traffic lane.
A Mercy Air 07 helicopter was requested to transport one of the motorcyclists who sustained major wounds, including suspected broken ribs and several lacerations, to Las Vegas University Medical Center. Minor wounds were reported on the other rider, but it’s unclear whether they were hospitalized or their current condition.
Officials are still trying to figure out what caused both motorcycle riders to lose control and crash. After the chopper had landed at the location, southbound Interstate 15 was reopened after roughly 30 minutes of closure.
Motorcycle Accident Statistics
In 2020, motorcyclists accounted for 14% of all road fatalities, 18% of all occupant deaths, and 4% of all occupant injuries, according to the National Safety Council. Only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of vehicle kilometers traveled were motorcycles. Perhaps fewer lives would have been lost in these horrible tragedies if the victims had used helmets.
The death rate every 100 million kilometers traveled increased by 23% from 2019 to 2020, while 11% more people lost their lives. Over a 10-year period, both total deaths and death rates rose by about 20% and 27%. Currently, the fatality per 100 million vehicle kilometers traveled is 5,579 (a rate of 31.64).
In 2020, California was home to roughly 785,000 motorcycles. The state remains one of the two deadliest in the United States for motorcycle riders, with a yearly death toll of more than 500. Only roughly 6% of these fatalities can be blamed on not wearing helmets.
