How Do I File a Police Report After an Accident
A California driver must report accidents to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) within ten (10) days of the accident if there are injuries, fatalities, or $1,000 or more of property damage. As stipulated in California Vehicle Code Section 20008, drivers must report accidents involving injuries or deaths to the California Highway Patrol or the local police department within 24 hours of the accident.
There are two ways in which people may file reports with the DMV and California Highway Patrol:
- It is necessary to call the police in the event of an incident. A police report will be issued, an investigation will be conducted, and a report will be submitted to the DMV and CHP on your behalf.
- You may file the report with the DMV and CHP on your own. It is essential that you complete the required forms and mail them to the appropriate offices as soon as possible.
