Authorities reported that a 20-year-old male pedestrian from Ceres was killed after being struck by two vehicles north of Modesto on Tuesday evening, February 07, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly crash occurred around 8:22 p.m. on the eastbound side of Kiernan Avenue, east of Carver Road.
A 30-year-old woman from Modesto was traveling in the left lane of Kiernan Avenue on the eastbound side in her GMC Acadia when she saw the man reportedly walking in the traffic lane in front of her.
Her car’s left front struck the pedestrian after failing to avoid him. She pulled over right away, and as her passenger exited the vehicle to check on the pedestrian, a Toyota Corolla operated by a 17-year-old Modesto resident struck him.
The driver also pulled over after the collision. Both were cooperative with the responding officers. Initial investigation revealed the man most likely stood up moments before the second vehicle hit him. The area also had no street lights.
The yet-to-be-identified victim was brought to a nearby hospital, where he passed away just a few hours later.
Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The Governors Highway Safety Association found that traffic-related fatalities decreased by 14 percent between 2007 and 2016. Despite this, there was a 27% increase in pedestrian fatalities over this time period. These figures highlight the increasing risk that pedestrians in the United States confront on the country’s roadways.
The California Department of Transportation has been increasing the number of roundabouts, while the California Office of Traffic Safety is financing pedestrian assessments in high-crash regions. These evaluations and recommendations are based on accurate engineering, education, and government regulation measurements.
The state of California has raised funding for pedestrian safety by 40% over the past three years. Even better, enrollment in the Senior Pedestrian course at the University of San Diego is open to everyone.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident
The police and other authorities need to be notified quickly if a car crash victim has any injuries or is killed. When answering a question, it’s better to stick to the facts rather than make assumptions. The victim may feel obligated to say sorry even though they were not at fault. The insurance provider may use such behavior as evidence against your claim.
