Heavy trucks, because of their robust construction, offer their occupants more protection in the case of an accident compared to passenger or smaller cars. Thus, the vast majority of traffic fatalities involve occupants of smaller vehicles. Devastating consequences may ensue from truck accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 4,965 individuals were killed in the United States due to heavy truck accidents in 2020. This was a 1% decrease from 2019’s total of 5,032. The majority of road deaths (71%) were caused by large trucks.

8.9% of all cars in fatal accidents in the United States in 2020 were large trucks. Ninety people in cars were killed in California accidents involving trucks in 2015. More than 50 people were killed in truck accidents in only two states: Texas and Florida.
