A 63-year-old man was killed after his car crashed into a truck that flipped over due to a suspected DUI driver in San Jose early Sunday morning, February 19, 2023.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred around 4:20 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 101, south of Story Road.
A red 1999 GMC Sierra pickup truck seemed to lose control and rolled over, ending up wrecked on the highway’s northbound lanes. The driver appeared unharmed moments before a silver 2009 Toyota Camry driven by the 63-year-old San Jose man barreled into it.
No further details on their identities were immediately available. Authorities wait for the victim’s next of kin to be notified before his name is made public.
The pickup truck driver was detained for vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving. As further investigation continued, all northbound lanes were shut down for roughly two hours.
Fatal DUI Accident Statistics
In 2019, the United States saw a total of 10,142 deaths due to drunk driving. The death toll in California alone stands at 949. The national average was 3.1 per 100,000, so the rate in this state was 2.4. That year, drunk driving was responsible for 26.3 percent of all traffic deaths in the state and 28.1 percent of all road deaths in the United States.
The number of individuals killed in drunk driving car accidents has decreased since the 1980s, according to a second study, but millions of drunk drivers on the roadways continue to be a concern today.
With a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or more, driving a vehicle is illegal in California. Motorists and pedestrians are at risk from drunk drivers because they are less able to control their driving behavior.
