[02-20-2023] Los Angeles County, CA – Pedestrian Hospitalized in Unknown State After Palmdale Train Crash

A pedestrian was hit by a freight train and was hospitalized in unknown conditions in Palmdale on Monday evening, February 20, 2023.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred around 5:56 p.m. at the East Palmdale Boulevard and 6th Street East intersection.

The deputies and firefighters arrived at the scene and located the pedestrian with unspecified injuries. The unidentified victim was taken to a nearby trauma center. No updates on their current condition were released.

Investigations are being conducted into the collision’s circumstances, but nothing is currently known.

The crash caused delays in eastbound traffic in the area.

In 2016, there were 893 people killed in railway accidents, a 20% increase from the previous year’s total of 744. Hospitalizations for critical injuries rose by 4%, or 5,780 individuals, between 2020 and 2021. A 21% increase from 2020 to 2021 was seen in fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings.

One-third or fewer of the injured passengers on the train had made a full recovery. Two hundred sixty (266) of the 893 pedestrian fatalities in 2021 were the result of train-pedestrian collisions.

About 3,216 commuters were hurt that year. If these injuries were severe enough, they could be fatal. In 2015, 66 persons were murdered in the U.S. at grade crossings where autos and trains collided.
