An individual was seriously injured following a crash involving several cars due to a suspected DUI driver in San Diego on Tuesday morning, February 21, 2023.
According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash occurred at about 1:45 a.m. on the 3600 block of Main Street in the neighborhood of Barrio Logan.
The reports said a white sports car was traveling westbound on Main Street before it crashed into several parked vehicles that caused one to be thrown onto the sidewalk and into the side of a structure. Witnesses claimed the driver then attempted to drive away just as the passenger side door opened and several bottles of beer spilled out.
The officers who responded to the scene took the driver into custody and pulled the passenger, who sustained unspecified injuries. The unidentified passenger was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition following CPR and other life-saving procedures performed by paramedics.
Witnesses also claimed that the driver smelled strongly of alcohol. The unidentified driver was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence.
DUI Accident Statistics
10,142 people lost their lives in the United States in 2019 due to drunk driving accidents. California experienced 949 fatalities that year. The national rate was 3.1 per 100,000 people relative to California’s rate of 2.4 per 100,000. Also that year, drunk driving was a contributing factor in 26.3% of fatalities in the state and 28.1% nationally.
A second report found that while the incidence of drunk driving accidents and the number of people killed in such accidents have decreased since the 1980s, there are still too many drunk drivers on the road causing problems to the government and other motorists.
If your BAC is 0.08 or higher while driving in California, you will be arrested. Drunk drivers pose a threat to pedestrians and other motorists because they lack the cognitive abilities necessary to safely operate a vehicle.
What to Do After a DUI Accident
It is crucial to notify the proper authorities as soon as possible after a car accident. When answering questions from the police or the insurance company, it is vital to be as factual as possible and to refrain from making any assumptions. When they have done nothing wrong, victims often feel they must apologize. Such actions could be used as justification for a claim denial by the insurer.
