At least eight people were injured in a 20-vehicle collision on the Interstate 10 Freeway in Yucaipa at Wildwood Canyon on Wednesday night, February 22, 2023.
The crash occurred around 10:24 p.m. at Wildwood Canyon Road and the 10 westbound.
Tractor trailers were among the many vehicles obstructing traffic.
There were eight injuries. The freeway was closed in both directions while the incident was cleared. The 60 Freeway’s westbound lanes were also shut down.
The roads reopened at around one in the morning on Thursday.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jonathan Gruidl, the bad weather came out of nowhere and caught people off guard.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) receives a report of a car accident in the United States every minute. California’s highways are deadly, killing an estimated 3,000 people annually in traffic-related accidents.
According to the National Safety Council, more than 110,000 Americans lose their lives in automotive accidents each year. Since 1990, there have been 3,898 fatalities and 2,711,000 injuries attributed to automobile accidents in California. Since 2013, the death rate has risen by an average of 23.5% each year, and experts warn that this upward trend will only accelerate if the government does not take appropriate action to address it.
When three or more cars collide with each other, it is called a “multi-vehicle crash.” According to statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 2010, more than 13,000 lives were lost in collisions involving four or more cars.
