Train Accident Statistics
It’s not always the most efficient or cost-effective way to get around town. The number of people killed or injured while traveling is on the rise.
All across the country, there are train accidents. According to the Department of Transportation, approximately 5,800 train-car collisions occur in the United States each year. They’re most common at railroad crossings. Due to these accidents, 600 people lost their lives, and 2,300 were injured.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration of the US Department of Transportation, approximately 80 percent of railroad crossings lack adequate warning devices (USDOT).
Derailments, poorly maintained tracks, a lack of adherence to safety regulations, inadequate security, and other carelessness are to blame for the majority of train accidents.
