DUI Accident Statistics
In 2019, 10,142 people’s lives were cut short because of drunk driving. In that year, 949 people died in California as a direct result of drunk driving, which equates to 2.4 deaths per every 100,000 people. Across the country, the rate was 3.1 cases.
At 26.3%, California had one of the highest rates in the United States of fatal traffic accidents in which alcohol had a role (the national average was 28.1%).
Another study indicated that drunk driving-related fatalities and accidents decreased in the 1980s in the United States, but the problem of thousands of drunk drivers is still a serious one today.
If a California resident’s BAC is 0.08 or over, the law allows for immediate arrest. Because of their impaired judgment and reaction time, drunk drivers pose a threat to other motorists.
What to Do After a DUI Accident
If you are involved in an accident with a driver who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, contact the authorities immediately. It is crucial to offer accurate information and avoid forming assumptions when communicating with authorities or insurance companies. Some victims would apologize. If a victim does this, the insurance company may refuse to pay out a claim.
