Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Like many cities, San Jose has high-risk areas where traffic accidents are more frequent. To address this, the city has implemented Project Vision Zero, leveraging technology to identify dangerous intersections, crosswalks, and roads. This data helps officials allocate resources effectively to reduce accident rates. Visit San Jose’s Vision Zero page for the latest data and trends.
Despite these efforts, pedestrian fatalities have remained a serious concern. Over the past decade, pedestrian-related deaths have ranged from 12 in 2012 to a peak of 32 in 2022. Many incidents involve jaywalking, pedestrian inattention, poor visibility at night, and impairment from alcohol or drugs. Most fatal accidents occur on busy, multi-lane roads rather than residential streets, often in low-light conditions. Authorities urge both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and use designated crosswalks to reduce these preventable tragedies.
