Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The 2022 California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) report highlights the significant issue of pedestrian accidents in Merced. That year, vehicles struck and either killed or injured 53 pedestrians, ranking Merced 5th out of 104 comparable cities in California. Among these, ten victims were under 15 years old (ranked 1st), while 4 were seniors aged 65 and older (ranked 46th). These statistics underscore the vulnerability of both young and elderly pedestrians.
Furthermore, pedestrian fatalities are increasing nationwide, emphasizing the urgent need for improved pedestrian safety measures. A 2023 Safe Transportation Research and Education Center(SafeTREC) report revealed that in 2021, 7,388 pedestrians died in vehicle crashes, averaging 20 deaths per day and comprising 17% of all traffic fatalities. While California saw a 13% drop in pedestrian deaths in 2024 compared to 2023, with 439 fatalities from January to June, the state’s per capita rate remained higher than the national average (1.1 vs. 0.97 per 100,000 residents), according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).
Although Merced’s pedestrian safety issues are part of a broader state and national trend, its high ranking in pedestrian collisions highlights the critical need for targeted interventions to protect vulnerable road users.
