Workplace Accident Statistics
Every year, tens of thousands of Californians sustain injuries on the job. Each year, the private sector accounts for 78% of California’s 466,000 non-fatal workplace injuries, as reported by the state’s Department of Industry Relations.
Across the state of California, 376 people lost their lives on the job in 2017. Workplace fatalities have decreased significantly from previous years, but there are still far too many of them.
According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than two-thirds of U.S. workers suffered a workplace injury in November 2020. This number is the same as it was in 2019.
Despite a decline in workers’ compensation claims, workplace fatalities rose by 2% from 2017 to 2018, to 5,333. The number of fatalities has been climbing steadily since 2010.
What to Do After a Workplace Accident
Anyone who has been hurt needs to get to a hospital immediately. It is unnecessary to ask for time off from work in an emergency. For the sake of everyone, but especially the family of the deceased, you must inform your employer of your injuries as soon as possible, preferably within the 30-day timeframe. Then, you need to look into the claim further. Make sure you verify if your employer has filed a workers’ compensation claim on your behalf.
Talk to a lawyer who specializes in cases involving workers’ compensation or workplace accidents. Seek legal counsel as soon as possible if you have been seriously injured on the job, your employer has denied your claim, or you are having any other difficulty obtaining workers’ compensation.
