What to Do After a Car Accident

No one can foresee a car crash, but you can be ready. Keep a car accident checklist in your glove compartment to help you keep your cool and act together after a collision. It can guide you on what to do, what to avoid, and how to protect your rights. You can follow these guidelines:

  • Stay Calm and do not admit fault. Make sure everyone is safe by remaining at the scene. Before checking anyone else, check yourself for injuries.
  • Get to a Safe Location and wait for the authorities. Please move any disabled vehicles to the side of the road. Please turn on your hazard lights to help avoid any further accidents.
  • Call 911 to report your collision. Call the police unless the accident was minor and resulted in no injuries or damage to property. The police can interview witnesses, gather proof, and put together a report about the incident.
  • Exchange Information with all parties involved. Document everything from your injuries to the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle that hit you.
  • Do Not Admit Fault under any circumstances, even to the police. Tell the police officer nothing but the truth about what happened.
  • Seek Medical Attention. See a specialist or your primary care physician as soon as possible. Receiving immediate medical care can lessen the severity of injuries.
  • Report to Your Insurance Company. California’s statute of limitations for reporting an accident to your insurer varies by company.
  • Speak to Insurance Adjusters. You can communicate with the claims adjuster, but you shouldn’t reveal any more information than is required. Before consulting with a lawyer, you should not give a recorded statement or accept a settlement offer from an insurance company.
  • Create a File. Gather and file all paperwork related to the incident, such as the police report, medical bills, details about the other driver, and plans for treating any injuries, in a case file.
  • Seek immediate legal counsel from a seasoned California car accident lawyer.
