Scooter Accident Statistics

People are increasingly using electric scooters for personal and app-based rentals. Thousands of scooters from Lime and Bird are dropped off in cities across California, where users can tap their screens to rent them. These scooters don’t need to be returned to a specific location because they are dockless (except for bike shares).

With their many advantages also come many risks: electric scooters. According to a new study, more than 40 percent of Southern California e-scooter crash victims suffered a head injury. Given that only 4.4% of riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, this may not be a shocking result.

The number of scooter-related accidents is rising as more people ride them. The number of scooter-related deaths and injuries in the United States increased by 222% between 2014 and 2018. An estimated 39,000 accidents involving scooters were documented.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the city received nearly 15,000 complaints about scooter use between June and September. Seventy-five percent of the complaints came from a small group of people (each of whom made an average of over 560 complaints).

San Diego has specific laws about riding scooters. According to the city, riders in San Diego must abide by the same rules as those in other California cities. It is illegal to ride a scooter on the sidewalk. Scooters must be parked to not obstruct traffic on the road or sidewalk.
