Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The number of people killed in automotive accidents fell by 14% between 2007 and 2016, according to data published by the Governors Highway Safety Association. The percentage of pedestrians killed rose by 27%, however, throughout this time frame.

These numbers show just how hazardous it has become to walk along public streets and roadways in the United States today and in the upcoming years.

In 2016 in the United States, 5,977 pedestrians lost their lives. Towards the end of the year, about 88 individuals were losing their lives each minute. Nearly 137,000 pedestrians were harmed in vehicle-on-pedestrian collisions in 2017.

More than 14,000 people were injured and 893 people lost their lives in pedestrian accidents in California in 2012. Statistics show that this is the most common reason why pedestrians in California end up in the hospital.

What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident

Traffic-related accidents involving pedestrians should be reported to the police immediately. Never assume anything or tell a fib to the authorities or the insurance company when being asked; simply tell what happened. If the victim tries to apologize after being found not guilty, the insurance company can use such behavior against a claim.
