What to Do After a Train Accident
After being struck by a train, especially if you were injured, it can be hard to think clearly. However, the outcome of your claim against the negligent party can be greatly influenced by what you say and do at the crash scene. You can protect the value of your personal injury claim by following these guidelines:
- Dial 911 immediately, especially if you or a loved one is involved in a train accident. The police can take statements and gather evidence for a formal report.
- When communicating with law enforcement or your insurance company, it is important to be honest and not make any assumptions.
- Don’t ever admit guilt, not even to the authorities. Such actions may be used as evidence against victims making claims by insurance companies.
- Get medical help. Quickly visit a hospital or your regular physician. Getting medical attention right away can lessen the severity of injuries.
- Prepare documents related to the accident, such as a copy of the police report, your medical bills, the other driver’s contact information, your injury treatment plans, and any other relevant paperwork.
- Obtain a copy of the police report by contacting the proper authorities.
