DUI Crash Statistics

Every day, over 30 people in the United States die due to drunk driving accidents. Drunk driving is responsible for around 29 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities in the United States. Sixty-one percent of these drivers have a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of.08 or greater.

DUI crashes kill nearly 10,000 people each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drugs and alcohol are involved in around 18% of fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Drunk drivers endanger public safety on any road, but California’s roads have extra hazards that can cause widespread damage and catastrophic accidents.

More than 30,000 Californians are seriously injured, and over 2,000 are killed in alcohol and drug-related car accidents each year. The state’s blood alcohol content (BAC) criteria for DUI (driving under the influence) and DWI (driving while intoxicated) vary depending on the driver’s age and whether the vehicle is private or commercial.

Drunk drivers frequently struggle to see, make sound decisions, and respond correctly in dangerous situations. Drivers’ impaired senses and affected mental state while navigating these hazardous road obstacles make a drunk driver an even greater danger and risk to the public’s safety along California’s most dangerous roadways.
