Fatal Train Accident Statistics
Trains are a cost-effective mode of transportation for both commuting and freight transport. Conductors must have the skills and experience to keep passengers and non-passengers safe when using various modes of transportation. They may cut corners or engage in other irresponsible behaviors that cause harm to others.
In the United States, approximately 5,800 train-car collisions occur each year, with the majority occurring near railroad crossings. Six hundred people were killed, and 2,300 others were injured in these tragic events, which occur on a regular basis.
More than half of all fatal train accidents occur at crossings where active safety systems are insufficient, poorly maintained, or non-existent. There may be no safeguards at all in some cases.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, over 1,000 people are injured in railway accidents in the United States each year. Derailments, collisions with other trains or cars, and unprotected railroad crossings are just a few of the ways these accidents occur.
In Southern California, commuter trains such as Metrolink are occasionally pushed from behind rather than being pulled by an engine in front of the carriages. There is a greater risk of derailment when vehicles are involved in an accident while being pushed along by their engines.
