According to the authorities, a 35-year-old Los Angeles woman died in a wrong-way, head-on crash on Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway in El Segundo last Saturday, April 23, 2022.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer G. Pepi., the collision occurred 1:13 a.m on the westbound Glenn Anderson Freeway east of Nash Street in El Selgundo.
The woman was identified as Evelyn L., according to the coroner’s office, which labeled her death an accident.
Linares drove her silver 20015 Toyota Camry eastbound in the number one lane until it crashed head-on into a westbound black 2017 Toyota Prius driven by a 35-year-old Manhattan Beach man, Pepi said.
Linares reportedly sustained a blunt force trauma, which eventually resulted in her death.
The Prius driver unsuccessfully tried to avoid the crash by swerving to the right, the officer said.
Paramedics pronounced Linares dead at the scene, Pepi said. The Prius driver was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center with major injuries.
It was not yet known whether alcohol and/or drugs played a role in the collision, Pepi said.
Fatal Head-On Collision Statistics
During a “head-on collision,” one vehicle’s front end collides with the front of another vehicle. Head-on crashes are among the most hazardous highways, frequently resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that in 2010, over 1,100 Americans died due to injuries originating from head-on car incidents.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, head-on crashes accounted for slightly over 10 percent of all fatal fatalities in the United States in 2018.
Head-on collisions are most commonly caused by a vehicle crossing a centerline or median and colliding with another. Unintentionally or intentionally driving down the wrong side of the road can also result in a head-on accident.
If you detect a driver drifting into your lane or approaching the highway the wrong way, you should ease off the gas and apply the brake pedal, turn to the right of the oncoming vehicle, and, if necessary, drive off the road. Hitting a ditch is preferable to colliding head-on with another car.
