What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian accidents can have life-altering consequences, often causing severe injuries or fatalities. Regrettably, these incidents happen frequently, particularly in busy cities and urban areas where vehicles and pedestrians share the same space. Understanding your legal rights and available choices is essential when you or someone you know has been involved in a pedestrian collision. Several steps should be followed.

  • Seek medical attention immediately: Your health and safety should be your top priority, so seek medical help even if you feel fine. Some injuries may not be apparent right away, and it is important to have a medical professional evaluate you.
  • Contact law enforcement: Call 911 and report the accident to the police. Please provide them with as much information as possible, including the accident’s location and any witnesses’ contact information.
  • Document the accident: Take photos or videos of the accident scene, including any damage to your property or injuries sustained. This can be valuable evidence for your case.
  • Contact a pedestrian accident lawyer: An experienced pedestrian accident lawyer can help you understand your legal rights and options and work to secure the compensation you deserve for your injuries and damages.
  • Notify your insurance company: Let your insurance company know about the accident as soon as possible, even if you were not at fault.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to data provided by the Governors Highway Safety Association, while there was a 14% decrease in traffic accident fatalities between 2007 and 2016, pedestrian deaths during the same period saw a significant increase of 27%. This suggests a potential ongoing rise in the number of pedestrians injured or killed by vehicles.

In 2012, California witnessed a troublingly high number of pedestrian fatalities and injuries resulting from car accidents, with 809 reported deaths and 14,000 injuries. This concerning trend demands attention and raises the alarm.

Statistics from 2016 revealed that over 6,000 individuals lost their lives in traffic accidents across the United States, averaging approximately 88 deaths per minute. Furthermore, around 137,000 injured individuals were transported to hospitals by ambulances the following year. These figures emphasize the gravity of the issue and the urgent need for preventive measures to address future accidents and fatalities.
