A multi-vehicle collision left three people dead, including a UC Santa Barbara student and five others seriously injured near Isla Vista Friday afternoon, May 28, 2022.
The fatal crash occurred just before 5:00 p.m. at the intersection of El Colegio and Stadium roads on the northwest side of the UCSB campus.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a Nissan sedan was speeding, ran a red light, slammed into two other cars, a BMW coupe and a Toyota SUV, and then crashed into a grove of eucalyptus trees.
The Nissan appears to have collided with the median curb and flown away, flattening the tops of the other vehicles as it spun out of control.
According to Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli, several victims were trapped in the wreckage and heavy extrication was required to free them.
The American Medical Response ambulance transported the injured victims to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment. Their true identities, as well as their medical conditions, were kept a secret.
The collision circumstances are under investigation by UCSB police, who have yet to respond to our repeated requests for information.
Fatal Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
Many people drive in California, and public transportation hasn’t kept up with the high population of the state’s major cities. Car accidents on our roads seem almost inevitable.
In this case, there was a multi-vehicle crash. Usually, three or more are involved in a multi-vehicle crash. Cars colliding with one another and then hitting other vehicles on the road are common sources of “chain reaction” crashes.
In most multi-vehicle incidents, the involved vehicles travel at high speeds on major highways. If the vehicles involved in the accident were traveling at high speeds, the likelihood of serious injuries is higher.
According to a new analysis from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multi-vehicle crashes, which account for more than 40% of all car accidents, kill around 13,000 people annually.
When you’re in a car accident, use your brakes carefully to slow down and steer into something soft instead of another vehicle, like shrubs or a guardrail. Also, be on the lookout for anyone who may be wandering around the area after a previous accident has occurred.
