Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In the U.S., the number of accidents involving pedestrians is going up. In the last 30 years, many road deaths have been caused by pedestrians.

The Governors Highway Safety Association says that between 2007 and 2016, the number of pedestrian deaths in the United States went up by 27%, while the number of deaths caused by other types of traffic went down by 14%.

In 2017, 5,977 people on foot died in the United States. It is thought that one person dies every 88 minutes. In 2017, about 137,000 pedestrians who were hurt in accidents but did not die went to the emergency room.

Recent studies show that pedestrians in California are more likely to get hurt or die than those in other states. In California, 893 pedestrians were killed, and 14,000 were hurt on the roads in 2018.

Most pedestrian accidents happen because drivers aren’t paying attention, are going too fast, or don’t give way to pedestrians. When facing problems like these, it’s important to have an attorney who knows what they’re doing on your side.

Pedestrians should always watch for cars going in any direction, including those turning left or right. If you can’t cross at a crosswalk or intersection, look for a well-lit area where you can see traffic well. Wait for a break in traffic to give you enough time to cross safely. As you cross, keep an eye out for cars.
