Fatal Motorcycle Crash Statistics
Riding a motorcycle provides undeniable benefits. Motorcycles are popular among some people because they are inexpensive, enjoyable, and require less parking space. Unfortunately, riding a motorcycle comes with its own set of risks.
Did you know that motorcycle riders are 16 times more likely to be injured and 35 times more likely to die in a crash than car passengers?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s National Center for Statistics and Analysis, 5,286 people died while riding motorcycles in the United States in 2016.
California also has an ideal climate for motorcycle riding. We have sunshine all year because of our temperate climate, and riders do not face seasonal weather challenges. If there isn’t much rain, snow, or ice, motorcycle riders can usually ride all year.
Unfortunately, this means that there are a lot of motorcycles on the road all year. Combined with California’s notorious traffic, this can be a recipe for disaster. In heavy traffic, motorcycles are more likely to be involved in accidents.
But there is a way to keep yourself from getting killed in a motorcycle accident. Wearing a helmet has been shown to reduce the risk of serious head injuries. Wearing a helmet could cut motorcycle fatalities by 37%.
