Train Accident Statistics

Everyone’s life revolves around public transportation. You’ve undoubtedly ridden a train or a bus at some point. It’s a cheap way to get around town without paying for parking or gas. Unfortunately, accidents involving public vehicles are becoming more common.

According to the National Transportation Safety Bureau, at least one person or a vehicle is hit by a train every two hours in the United States. Every year, over 1,000 individuals are killed in train accidents. Due to these mishaps, around 2,300 people were injured, and 600 died.

More than half of all fatal train accidents occur at train crossings that lack active safety technology, inadequate safety equipment, or no safety measures to warn unsuspecting motorists.

In the United States, over 7,200 people have died due to train accidents since 1997. Pedestrian railroad accidents are currently among the leading causes of death on American railroads.

Pedestrians can lower their chances of being involved in a traffic accident by wearing bright clothing, crossing roads in open places away from automobiles, trees, or other objects that block drivers’ vision of them, choosing a safe route to their destination, and remaining awake and attentive.
