Pedestrian Accident Statistics

While driving, more people are injured or killed by pedestrians and motorcycle riders. In the event of an accident, they aren’t adequately protected.

Many people have been fatally or severely injured while walking in recent years. Although traffic-related deaths decreased by 14% between 2007 and 2016, more people were killed walking than driving.

In 2017, the United States lost 5,977 pedestrians to traffic accidents. One fatality occurs every 88 minutes, according to this estimate. Non-fatal injuries to pedestrians cost emergency rooms more than $137,500 in 2017.

Pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries are disproportionately high in California. Last year, there were 893 people killed and 14,000 injured while walking in California.

In most cases, drivers’ negligence is to blame for pedestrian accidents, including speeding and failing to yield the right of way. Advice from an experienced lawyer is essential in these kinds of cases.
