[06-18-2023] San Diego County, CA – Mother Arrested on DUI Charges After Crash Killed Two Children on SR-78 in Vista

Two minors, identified as a 10-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, tragically died in a vehicle collision involving a DUI driver on State Route 78 in Vista Sunday night, June 18, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol said the incident occurred around 6:12 p.m. on the highway’s eastbound lanes, east of the Mar Vista Drive exit.

Authorities were alerted to the incident in which the two children, identified as Alan G. and Amy M., were struck on the highway. The minors reportedly entered oncoming traffic after exiting their vehicle and were hit by a Nissan sedan in the No. 3 lane. Tragically, both children were declared deceased at the scene.

Initial reports from the Vista Fire Department, which also responded to the crash, indicated that an open suitcase on top of the car may have prompted the minors to exit their vehicle.

The authorities have arrested the mother, Sandra O., 33, on suspicion of drunk driving. She now faces charges of driving under the influence, gross vehicular manslaughter, and child endangerment and is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.

Four other children in the car are cared for by another family member. The driver of the Nissan, a 41-year-old Vista woman, did not sustain any injuries and remained at the scene.

The crash caused road closures for approximately four hours while authorities investigated.
