[06-21-2023] Fiery Crash Claims Life of 21-Year-Old Woman on I-5 near BakersfieldA 21-year-old woman was killed after a fiery crash on Interstate 5 in Bakersfield on Wednesday morning, June 21, 2023.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on I-5, located west of Bakersfield.

The report said that two individuals from San Francisco were traveling in the SUV, heading north on I-5. Unfortunately, the driver of the SUV lost control, resulting in a collision with the trailer of a semi-truck in the second lane.

The SUV driver overcompensated, leading to a loss of control and ultimately coming to a stop on the right shoulder.

Tragically, the SUV caught fire as a result of the collision. The woman who was on the passenger’s seat in the SUV succumbed to her injuries at the accident scene.

According to the Kern County Fire Department, the SUV’s back compartment contained fireworks that caught fire during the collision, leading to the need for firefighters to close lanes on I-5 to extinguish the ensuing blaze. The fire quickly spread and consumed roughly one acre of grass.

The investigation is ongoing.
