Recommended Steps To Take After a Car Accident

If you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident, especially one resulting in a fatality, it is critical to take immediate and well-considered actions to protect your health, safety, and legal rights. As personal injury lawyers in California, we recommend the following steps to ensure you navigate this challenging time effectively:

  1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Even if you do not experience obvious pain, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Many injuries, such as internal trauma or whiplash, may not manifest right away. Early medical intervention ensures that injuries are properly diagnosed and documented, which is essential for both your health and any future legal claims.
  2. Report The Accident To Authorities
Promptly notify law enforcement by calling 911, particularly if the accident involves serious injury or fatality. Officers will investigate the scene, collect necessary information, and prepare an official report. This report will be a critical piece of evidence for any insurance claims or legal proceedings that may follow.
  3. Gather Evidence At The Scene
If you are physically able, gather as much information as possible from the scene of the accident. This includes taking photographs of the vehicles, any visible damages or injuries, and the surrounding environment. Be sure to exchange contact information with other drivers and witnesses. Their testimony can significantly assist with the investigation and support your case.
  4. Notify Your Insurance Provider
Report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. Be honest about the details of the incident, but avoid making assumptions about fault. Insurance companies may attempt to settle quickly, so it is important to review any offers carefully. Having a personal injury lawyer review your case can help protect your rights throughout this process.
  5. Consult With A Lawyer
Accidents, particularly those resulting in serious injury or fatality, often involve complex legal and insurance issues. Consulting with an experienced car accident lawyer is important to understand your rights and options. A skilled attorney can assist with gathering evidence, communicating with insurance companies, and guiding you through the legal process.

Approximately 19,515 people died in car accidents, which marks a 3.3% decrease compared to 20,190 deaths during the same period in 2022. This reduction in fatalities occurred in both the first and second quarters of 2023.

Additionally, the data shows that people drove 2.3% more miles in 2023, which is an increase of 35.1 billion miles compared to the previous year. Despite the rise in miles driven, the number of traffic deaths decreased, resulting in a lower fatality rate of 1.24 deaths per 100 million miles driven. This is better than the predicted rate of 1.31 deaths.
