According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4% of all car accidents in California involve fatal bicycle accidents. This is twice the national average, making California the country’s leading state regarding bicycle-related deaths.
From 2016 to 2018, 455 cyclists died from traffic accidents, making it the highest rate with 3.9 bike accident fatalities per million people for the past 25 years. Los Angeles has the highest number of fatal bike accidents with 106 deaths.
Bike-sharing programs are now available in some major cities, and more people are taking public transportation to get to work. As more people drive, the more likely an accident will occur. You must behave as you would when driving a motor vehicle. You should obey roadway rules, including stopping at red lights and riding in the same direction as traffic.
