Car Accident Statistics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. Department of Transportation has provided its preliminary estimates for traffic-related fatalities in 2024. It is projected that 39,345 people died in traffic accidents, showing a reduction of around 3.8% from the 40,901 deaths recorded in 2023. This marks the first time since 2020 that the number of traffic fatalities has fallen below the 40,000 mark.
This reduction in traffic deaths has been ongoing since the second quarter of 2022, with the trend continuing into the final months of 2024. In total, this represents the 11th consecutive quarter of decreasing traffic fatalities, suggesting that initiatives to enhance road safety may be successfully contributing to the decline in deaths.
