Steps To Take After A Pedestrian Accident
If you have been injured in a pedestrian accident, it is normal to feel shaken and unsure of what to do next. Taking the right steps can help protect your health, your well-being, and your ability to take action later on.
- Get To A Safe Area
If you can move without making your injuries worse, try to get away from traffic or other hazards. Your safety comes first. - Call 911 Or Ask Someone Nearby To Call
Emergency responders can provide medical help and make sure the incident is reported to law enforcement. Even if your injuries seem minor, it is important to have professionals on the scene. - Accept Medical Care
Let paramedics examine you and consider going to the hospital. Some injuries take time to appear, and early care may help prevent complications. - Speak With Law Enforcement
Tell the officers what happened using clear, honest information. If you are not sure about something, it is okay to say you do not know. - Collect Information If You Are Able
Try to gather the driver’s contact and insurance details. If there are witnesses, ask for their names and phone numbers. If you are unable to do this, a police report may help later on. - Take Photos Or Notes
If possible, take pictures of the scene, your injuries, and anything else that may be important. Write down what you remember as soon as you can. - Speak With A Pedestrian Accident Lawyer
A lawyer can explain your rights and help you understand your legal options. You are not required to take legal action, but getting advice may help you make the best decision for your situation.
Pedestrian Accident Statistics
Walking is a simple and healthy way to get around, but it can become dangerous when pedestrians are near moving vehicles.
In 2022, about 7,522 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the United States. This was a small increase of 0.7 percent compared to the year before, showing that pedestrian safety remains an important concern nationwide.
In California, there were 1,158 pedestrian deaths in 2022. Unlike the national trend, California saw a small improvement. The number of pedestrian fatalities in the state went down by 1.8 percent from the previous year.
These numbers remind us why it is so important to stay alert, follow traffic rules, and look out for one another on the road, whether we are walking or driving.
