[06-25-2023] 2 Male Pedestrians and Their Dog Killed Following Suspected DUI Collision at Van Buren BoulevardTwo male pedestrians and their dog were killed after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in Riverside on Sunday evening, June 25, 2023.

According to the Riverside Police Department, the incident occurred at Van Buren Boulevard and Challen Avenue at around 11:48 p.m.

An unlicensed male 17-year-old Perris resident drove his pickup truck, a 2011 GMC pickup truck, southbound at high speed when he allegedly lost control and struck the victims while they were walking their dog. The driver also struck a utility pole at the intersection, destroying a traffic light.

The victims, one riverside resident, the other a non-US resident, both in their 20s, and their dog were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver sustained a major internal injury and was taken to a hospital.

The suspect driver is set to be detained by authorities upon recovery. The suspect’s parents are reportedly out of the country, and relatives have been looking after him.

Drugs or alcohol are suspected to be a factor in this incident.
