Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to the NHTSA report, one pedestrian is killed in traffic every two hours. Furthermore, a pedestrian is hurt by a vehicle every eight minutes.

Injuries to pedestrians occur about 110,000 times a year in the US. According to the NHTSA, approximately 6,227 pedestrians were killed in 2018, up 250 from the previous year.

Whether marked or unmarked, pedestrians have the right-of-way in crosswalks. Despite having the right-of-way, pedestrians must obey all traffic regulations. To keep pedestrians safe, you must slow down and exercise extra caution when driving up to a crossing.

Pedestrians should always adhere to safety precautions to prevent being struck by a car. Even though there is no assurance that an accident won’t happen, adhering to recommended safety recommendations greatly reduces the possibility of being held accountable if one does.

Nevertheless, pedestrians may be involved in traffic accidents even if they exercise caution and obey all traffic laws. It is more challenging to drive defensively than to walk defensively. It is much more difficult for pedestrians to flee danger when a car moves quickly.
