Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicycles are regarded as vehicles under California law. Drivers and cyclists must abide by the same set of traffic regulations to avoid collisions. When they come to a red light, they must stop and proceed straight.

Bicycles and other modes of transportation, such as cars, are subject to the same laws. They can ride in the street if there isn’t a designated bike lane. Because of this, cyclists who ride too closely to vehicles are frequently ignored or attempted to pass.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) reported that 840 cyclists were killed by automobiles in 2016, accounting for 2% of all traffic fatalities.

The majority of bicycle accident fatalities happen in California each year. More than 400 cyclists lost their lives in traffic accidents in California between 2016 and 2018.

Wearing a helmet, keeping your tires and brakes in good condition, and making sure your body is proportionate to the size of your bike are all good bicycle safety practices.
