A 13-year-old boy riding his bike was struck and kidnapped by a man in the San Fernando Valley on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.
The crash occurred around 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Tupper Street in the Panorama City area.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the teen was struck by a 2019 dark gray Toyota Tundra pickup truck.
Ottoniel M., 38, the suspect, jumped out of the vehicle and displayed a badge indicating his status as a police officer to the young boy.
Mendoza allegedly instructed the boy to enter the pickup truck as he carried on acting as a police officer, according to LAPD.
When the boy entered the truck, and the suspect began to be pursued, a crash witness dialed the actual police.
Near Sepulveda Boulevard and Tupper Street, LAPD eventually located the suspect’s truck.
After being stopped, Mendoza and the pickup truck passenger were both arrested by LAPD.
The boy, who was the third passenger in the pickup truck, was struck by Mendoza earlier in the day and was taken to the hospital to be examined.
Although Mendoza was detained on suspicion of kidnapping, the passenger was eventually freed by LAPD.
Mendoza later became free after Thursday after posting bail.
LAPD is now concerned that Mendoza may have other potential victims in mind.
Bicycle Accident Statistics
For short distances, many people choose to ride their bikes rather than drive. In contrast to motorists, bicyclists face greater risks on the road.
Only 2% of all road fatalities in 2016 were caused by motor vehicles crashing into cyclists.
Bicyclists (pedal cyclists) are responsible for 2% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. In 2018, 871 bicyclists were killed, making it the deadliest year for cyclists.
Cyclists are involved in only 4% of all car accidents in the state. There is no state like California when it comes to cyclists dying on the road.
According to recent statistics, California has the highest number of bicycle fatalities in the country. From 455 deaths in 2016 to 455 deaths in 2018, California saw an increase in the number of people killed while cycling.
